What's your musical horoscope? (Put your music player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.) Inspired by Stephanie.
I was trying for a long time to remember the name of this interesting musical instrument, in fact one of the very first true electronic musical instruments. I had read about it, but forgot the name, and had no way of remembering it back. By some stroke of luck -- when I gave a del.icio.us search on 'vox', the name came up -- and that's because it's also called thereminvox.
It's really amazing that such an interesting device was invented in 1919; and the way it's played is also space-age:
"... the theremin is unusual in that it requires no physical contact in order to produce music and was, in fact, the first musical instrument designed to be played without being touched. The instrument consists of an array of circuitry including two antennas around which the user moves his or her hands to play."
I'm pretty sure you'd be familiar with the sound produced by this instrument; the reason being:
"While not enjoying the wide use in classical music performance for which it was originally designed, the instrument found great success as the 'eerie' background sound in countless motion pictures, notably, Spellbound, The Red House, The Lost Weekend, The Spiral Staircase, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Thing (From Another World), The Ten Commandments (the 1956 DeMille film), Ed Wood, Mars Attacks!, Forbidden Planet, and in Bartleby."
This album is my Web 2.0 album.
Why?
Because it was the first piece of information that I downloaded through bittorrent, which I had gathered up enough courage to use, emboldened by my new broadband connection.
I was listening to this album when I first started my first blog and when I was installing Opera and Firefox.
I liked most of the songs, particularly Speed of Sound, just like most of the people out there.
