My 8th day away from home, and 6th in India.
Let's see what I did in the last few days:
First 2 days I was in Dubai - attending two meetings - one wearing my old hat, and one in the new. Dubai was as soulless and ostentatious as ever -- the hotel was awful, the traffic was pretty bad and we had to endure this boat cruise which also included some magic show done by this Aladdin genie lookalike in human dimensions. Needless to say, like most of the Dubai stuff, it looked very artificial and thank God it ended just when we started yawning. The best thing was it rained quite a lot in Dubai, which was pretty fantastic and the papers said it was record rainfall in quite some time
It felt pretty weird to be going to office in Bombay. All my working life, I'd only known one place as my office (in fact, two -- but it's the same company, only the office moved from one city to another) -- in the sense I've worked with more or less the familiar set of people. I had come to this office quite a few times before, but always as a visitor -- now I looked at it as my workplace -- and it felt strange. My new coworkers seemed nice and helpful and all -- and the fact that I knew many of them from previous interactions also helped.
New boss has scheduled three trips inside India in the next 4 days (Hyderabad, Kolkata and Lucknow -- yeah
bastiat , I called you up to inform, but you never received!) and will have to fly to Sri Lanka in January -- so I guess the hectic travels that I had been forewarned about would be coming true.
Have looked at a few houses, six in fact. Only one thing to say, rentals are incredibly expensive here -- at least if you compare to Dhaka standards.
Saw The Prestige yesterday. Christopher Nolan didn't disappoint -- I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the Nikola Tesla's role in the film (played, interestingly, by David Bowie) and how he brought the electric version of the steampunk flavour to the film. I liked that a lot. Nothing like a Man ahead of his time.
Oh by the way, saw V for Vendetta, and regretted later that I shouldn't have wasted such a good movie on the small airplane screen. Typically I only choose to see movies that I wouldn't buy as DVDs or watch in theatres to watch on planes. This one was really good -- will buy the DVD and see it again.
Gotta go to sleep now -- have a plane to catch in the morning.
I've been putting off the announcement for quite some time -- for no other reason than good ol' procrastination...
I'm moving to Mumbai, India for at least 2 years -- I'll be taking up a new position there for my job.
I'm expected to join by Dec 15th -- so by 10th or so I'll be moving...
